ATC Day One: Sam’s tip for success? Get in the sea
MARKING its 25th year, the Trident Trust All-Terrain Challenge began with a testing cliff stage yesterday.
Its format means that there are battles being fought from front to back, creating motivating friendly rivalries and plenty of smiles along the way.
Sam Ingrouille is a familiar face on the local running scene, clocking up the miles in club races since picking the sport up again in 2010.
It was her second time taking part in the ATC, after completing it last year.
‘It was fun. In our division we were all encouraging each other and it was just brilliant, so this year I decided to give it another go. ‘
The training has not gone quite as well this year, she said, but she has been out cliff running in preparation knowing there are so many steps involved during what is a tough week.
Yesterday the sun was blazing down on the route based around Saints Bay.
‘It was very hot, the sudden change in weather made it really hard because I’m not very good in the heat. Last time it was quite drizzly and lovely.’
Her aim for the first stage was simply to finish.
‘But I had somebody in front to follow which was really useful, and in the end I had someone behind me on the steps. The steps felt like they went on forever, but having somebody behind weirdly really helped get to the end.’
She is a big fan of the format where those taking part are split into divisions after the first stage.
‘I’m in the bottom division, but just trying to get a few seconds to go up a place, is really motivating.’
Fatigue becomes an increasing factor as the week goes on, Sam’s tip:
‘I go in the sea.’
She finished in 52:57.
Will Bodkin was the first runner home in 24:40, a small stumble over the last step an indication of the effort he put in. He was clear of Luke Richards, 26:10, and Fabio Teles, 26:36.
Rosie Williams was the leading woman in 32:18, followed by Elise Bott in 33:55 and Mel Nicolle in 34:17.
Today’s (Monday 19 July) stage is a 5km road race. Competitors meet at Pleinmont Kiosk 5.45pm for the briefing.
