Duo humbled by support for car pull

TWO fundraisers who pulled a car for a marathon distance have been humbled by the support they received.

Warren Mauger (right) and Philip Smith (left) pulled the one tonne Fiat 500 up and down Vazon coast road for 26.94 miles in 9hrs 16mins.

They were raising awareness of the This is Epic car raffle, tickets to win the Fiat 500 Hybrid Sport are still available from Le Mont Saint Garage, which donated the car, Allbeauty in Smith Street, Upgrade Fitness or by contacting Louise@thisisepic.gg.

They began their effort at 6am, with a spectacular sunrise and then calm sunny conditions.

Both were pushed well outside their comfort zone for a challenge which saw them having to bulk and strengthen up, far removed from their more usual running-based routines. You can read about their training and motivation in the first edition of ActiveGsy.

Warren said that the first half of the challenge was not too bad, but they soon became very aware of the training they had done and how they were drawing on it.

‘As each mile went by the inclines got harder and harder,’ he said.

‘The last eight miles we were really digging in and it was really tough. It was very different to running. The hamstrings and calves were really screaming whenever they were called on. The downhill bits were a welcome relief.’

He said that the support from everyone was phenomenal and ‘really humbling’.

‘We didn’t expect motorists to be stopping to give money. And also the motorists beeping or cheering in support. It shows Guernsey at its best.’
