Chance to get courtside at the Island Games by volunteering

With just over a year to go until Guernsey hosts the 2023 NatWest International Island Games, the Guernsey Basketball Association is appealing for volunteers to help with scoring and umpiring games during the event.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in this prestigious event, watching representatives from all the different islands competing, including Guernsey, islands within the British Isles, Menorca, Gibraltar, Cayman, Bermuda, Saaremaa, and Gotland to name a few,’ said GBA president Pete Beausire.

The Guernsey men’s and women’s team are both aiming to medal.

‘Basketball is a fast-paced, exciting game and you will get to be court side with the best view of the game, while you keep the score and run the main clock and 24 second clock or support the event in other ways,’ said Pete.

Emma Webb is the GBA’s Island Manager and says that anyone can volunteer, they will receive training ahead of the event.

‘You will need to be available during the week of 8th to 14th July 2023, although we won’t need you every day,’ said Emma.

‘You will be given official training and then allocated local league fixtures throughout the 2022/2023 season to improve and learn more about the game of basketball. You will also be an official volunteer of the Games and will complete some pre-games training too.

‘We are happy to welcome any volunteers over the age of 14 as there will be other tasks that young people can help with at the event as well as timekeeping and scoring for older volunteers.’
