‘I’m tired, I hurt, but I wouldn’t miss it’

FOR Greg Josey the social side of running is a key reason he puts on his trainers.

He will chat to anyone.

The Trident Trust All Terrain Challenge is a perfect fit with its camaraderie, support and friendly rivalries.

This is his first year taking part – he is currently locked in a fight for the top spot of Division Six.

Greg returned to the sport two years ago as he struggled with his weight.

‘I’ve done a lot of the cross country events, Park Run, which is really my passion, the ATC was really just a mad thing that I wanted to do, but I’m so glad that I have,’ he said.

‘It is so tough, it doesn’t matter what strength you are, it’s tough for you. But it’s really enjoyable, I’ve met a lot of new people, everyone is encouraging, the support is fantastic.’

We spoke as a passing storm rumbled overhead before the Saints Bay hill climb.

He was anticipating a tough time of it, having given everything he had during the Icart Loop the previous day.

‘I didn’t have anything left,’ he said.

It has been a case of taking each day as it comes.

‘Day one I didn’t know what to expect,’ he said.

‘I run with JPs, so have done a bit on the cliffs, but I had no idea, just sort of stood at the back and thought I’d go from there. The first set of steps I thought I ran OK, but the last two lots coming back, I had no idea about the kiosk steps. The last set of steps are bad enough, but the kiosk ones just blew my mind, so I found it very tough.

‘The Imperial I enjoyed, a 5K, fairly flatish, that was probably my best run. There’s a few people I like chasing that are better than me so I always have that. Literally with Joe Armstrong, I’m chasing him and he’s pushing me, so that’s really good.

‘Each race is different, so I approach it how I feel. Last night as soon as I got to the start line I wanted to be at the first lane first and I wanted to lead group six from there. I probably did until halfway and then got taken by Lousie [Critchlow]. She pulled me along, then Joe came up towards the end, he’s strong on the steps, and my legs had given in by then.’

The friendly rivalries that develop during the week are a big motivation.

‘The 800m track relay, luckily I know Paula Dodd really well and I was drawn with her.

‘She’s faster than me generally, just to come off the barrier with her, I think she knocked about 35 seconds off my 800m time. Just the pulling of each other, the rivalry, it’s brilliant. I’m tired today, and I hurt, but I still wouldn’t miss it.’

Greg is aiming to run the Guernsey Marathon in October, having not completed the distance for more than 30 years.

He ran half marathons here in the late 1980s, did the Church to Church as a youngster, but has never run 26.2 miles in Guernsey.

‘I was glad it was postponed until later in the year. I’ve done quite a few long runs on my own, so I’m happy with that.’

He heads out early Saturday morning once a month and finishes with the Park Run for the last 5k.

He is also doing the Donkey Drop out. He has taken part once before, completing eight hours, and this time aims for 12.

‘Two years ago I did it and at six hours my head had gone, my legs were wobbling. Danny Le Page turned up on his push bike and got me going again. Because the start and the finish line is there, once you get back in that circle you might as well go again.’

As for further into the future, he is not so sure.

But there is one more local race on his mind.

‘I hate the cliffs, I hate hills. I’d love to have a go at the GU36 one day.’

Today the event heads for the final race in Herm.

The top of Division Six is the closest race for honours.

Louise Critchlow leads on 2:43:43 with Greg second on 2:44:29.

In Division One Will Bodkin kept up his winning streak for the week on the Saints hill, with a strong performance from Mikey Ingrouille for second on the day followed by footballer Ross Allen.

Elise Bott stretched her lead at the top of the women’s standings from Mel Nicolle.
