Sports provision at Les Ozouets will be ‘significant’ addition

PROPOSALS for the new post-16 campus at Les Ozouets include a new sports centre and multi-use pitch that will benefit the wider community.

Education, Sport & Culture’s planning application was submitted this week.

The site will house a sixth form centre and The Guernsey Institute.

There will be 1,600m2 of sports provision for teaching and community use.

A sports hall will be marked out with four badminton courts across a basketball court, with seating for around 86 spectators.

Les Ozouets sports plans also include a gym and sports laboratory, four changing rooms which lead out to the external sports area and two classrooms.

There is no swimming pool.

The Guernsey Sports Commission has worked with Education and the project team and believes the sports provision will be a fantastic facility for the island.

‘We believe the proposed facilities will add significantly to the portfolio of sporting facilities on the Island and specifically around the hub of Footes Lane,’ said commission director Jeremy Frith.

‘The focus of the Sports Commission has been to ensure that the interests of community users are prioritised alongside those of education to ensure the best return possible for the public’s investment.

‘All of the facilities will be used thoroughly for educational provision however the significant period of use at weekends, evenings and throughout the holidays will also be maximised.

‘We will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure the best possible access to the facilities for both education and community users once the site becomes operational.’

ESC president Andrea Dudley-Owen said the new campus could be a ‘cultural game-changer for Guernsey and Alderney’.

‘Not only will the post-16 campus provide a truly adult learning environment for our young people, but it will also offer many educational and training opportunities to the community as part of our commitment to lifelong learning. Having had this vision supported by the States, we are extremely pleased with how the plans have progressed to develop the site with the right facilities to make it a reality.’
